I’m still experimenting with framing and mounting. Below are the methods I have tried and have had good results with. I’d love to hear if you have other suggestions!
Plywerk for Mounting and Framing
Plywerk.com allows you to order blank bamboo and maple panels with an adheasive in various sizes, OR upload digital files that they will adhere to the frame before shipping. The sizing options have been beneficial especially if using mobile apps like Instagram that crop images to a square.
Here are a few pics of the bamboo frames we have ordered. They worked great for multiple photobooth photo strips that we had mounted next to each other onto one frame:
Framing with a Mat (For a Square Frame):
Most of my images are square, and square frames can be challenging to find. We’ve found an 8″x 8″, but the most common is 12″x 12″, usually used for framing album covers. These are usually pretty cheap/plastic, so if you prefer a nicer standard size frame, see below.
What we’ve found works well for a square frame is mounting a square image with a custom mat (we’ve ordered from Redimat) with the outside dimensions either 8″x 8″ or 12″x 12″ (to match the size of the frame). The size of the print you have will determine the inside dimension. For example, if your print is 10×10, your outside mat/frame dimension would be 12×12, and inside would be a 1/4 inch shy of 10×10 (so as to leave some room for the mat to hold the photo down) so 9.75 x 9.75 for the inside dimension.

Framing with a Mat (For a Standard Frame Size):
If you are trying to fit a square print into a Standard Frame, we’ve found some offset mats that work well for these size frames:
- 8″x10″ (8×10 mat with 5×5 print) – Found these mats at Michaels Arts + Crafts
- 11″x14″ (11×14 mat with 7×7 print) - Found these mats at Michaels Arts + Crafts
